Michael and Charlie the cat

Michael and Charlie the cat

"I have a little yellow kitten named Charlie. He's only about four months old and he's full of fun and mischief every minute.  Well, he and Michael took a liking to each other right away.  All the while Michael was waiting for the make-up man to get make-up on his brothers, Michael was out in the back yard playing with Charlie.  And when Michael would have to go before Dad's camera for pictures, Charlie just didn't want to leave Michael alone!  They became such good friends that Michael was hoping he could take Charlie home with him.  But Tony reminded Michael that there were already two dogs at home, and they might not  like Charlie except as dessert.  Michael agreed, and I was relieved, too, 'cause I didn't want to give Charlie up, though I would have for Michael Jackson! "

A lucky encounter...

I found this funny little story from one of the MJ forums quite sometime ago, but it still puts smile on my day whenever I read it :)  lucky them boys...

A me and a buddy of mine met Michael Jackson back in 2001 or 2002. Talked to him for about 10 mins. Was prob the nicest person I've ever met. Yes pics are 100% real. And yes that is a showercap and rubber gloves.

It was in Vegas. They opened a jewelry store in the Vanitian for MJ at 1:30am… my buddy and I just happened to be walking by and saw him in there. The store had glass walls. We knocked on the glass and he saw my buddy wearing the showercap and rubber gloves and started laughing. He walked us along the wall to the front door and came out to talk to us. We got to talk to him for a bit before anyone else noticed. I tried to get him to go have a beer with us but he said his kids were upstairs so he couldn't. I got him to autograph a piece of paper I had in my pocket. Still have the original pics too. I need to frame em.

A funny recollection...

MJ's drawing of his sister LaToya as a prank,  in late 70's

A story from Katherine Jackson's book, My Family

Michael and LaToya: Partners in Prank

Because they still lived at home, Michael, Janet, and LaToya were especially close. Somehow, Janet and LaToya had the ability to turn my increasingly private, driven son into the lighthearted Michael of old - if only for a little while.

They loved to play practical jokes on one another. Michael especially enjoyed tormenting LaToya with fake spiders and tarantulas. He’d place one of his plastic creatures atop the phone in her room, call her, and listen for her shrieks.  Knowing how particular she was about her room, he’d also delight in charging through the door and bouncing off her bed, with its white-satin sheets.

“I’ll teach you to be so picky!” he’d exclaim amid her furious screams.

Having been informed by Michael that he was so proud to be working with Sidney Lumet, LaToya conceived the revenge prank of all time.

One day shortly before Michael left for New York to begin filming, he received a call on his private line from “Mr. Lumet’s secretary." Mr. Lumet was in the neighborhood, the voice announced, and would be stopping by in five minutes to take him out to dinner.

Michael didn’t know what to do first; he wasn’t dressed, and his room was a mess. Somehow in five minutes he made himself presentable, tidied up, and ran from door to door informing everyone excitedly, “Sidney Lumet is coming to take me to dinner!” He then sat down and waited for our security to inform him that Mr. Lumet had arrived. And waited. I sat with him; I, too, believed that the director was coming.

Finally, LaToya confessed, “Michael, Sidney Lumet isn’t taking you todinner. That was me on the phone!”

I’ve never seen Michael so angry. He dragged LaToya outside and wet her from head to toe with the hose.

A Bit of HIStory for today

July 20, 1988:  Michael Jackson was presented with a Sword to commemorate the Bad Tour at the Guildhall party.

In the evening, a banquet is held to commemorate the imminent Bad shows at Wembley Stadium. Michael became the first ever commoner to enter the London’s historic Guildhall’s Royal Entrance, a unique privilege that required the Queen’s personal approval.

His arrival was heralded by the red-jacketed trumpeters of the Life Guard cavalry, usually seen marching along the Mall. There followed a pounds 75,000 banquet, during which the roast beef was paraded through the room by the Corps of Drums of the Honourable Artillery Company.

Dancers in Olde English costume scattered rose petals at Michael’s feet. Then he watched wide-eyed as first Henry VIII, then Elizabeth I, Lord Nelson, Nell Gwynn, Robin Hood, Maid Marion and Dick Whittington paid their respects.

Ballet dancers burst from a box.

Fire-eaters, jugglers, jesters and Elizabethan musicians visited his table. Then Michael was stunned as Merlin appeared in a puff of smoke, and glittering knights in armour bowed before him.

Michael took the salute as the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers beat the retreat, walking up and down a line of liveried Life Guard troops as if he were a general inspecting them.

He bopped lightly on his heels as the band played and grinned wildly when they launched into a version of Billie Jean.

Then a knight in shining armour galloped across the courtyard, leapt from his saddle, pulled a sword from a stone and went down on one knee before handing the sword to Michael.

He was blissfully unaware of the historical significance, and handed the sword – the sword King Arthur pulled from the stone before he recruited the knights of the Round Table Knights of the Round Table – to a 7 ft minder wearing a top hat, and made him the King of England.

Katherine Jackson: on Michael’s “Store” and who stole Michael’s penny?

From the Book, “My Family” by Katherine Jackson

"His first goal in life must have been to own a candy store because he loved to play storekeeper. After Joe began giving him and his brothers a weekly allowance, he would spend every cent of it on candy and gum. He’d come home with an armful of it, take a board and two bricks and place them in the doorway to the boys’ bedroom, place a cloth over the board, lay the candy on top of it, and sell it to his brothers and sisters and friends for the same price he’d paid for it.

Michael was also a serious candy-eater and gum-chewer. Before he opened his “store,” he’d save his pennies so that he could purchase bubble gum at the concession stand at the Little League ball park behind our house. One night, however, he couldn’t find his penny for gum and he was so upset he started crying. “Mother, do you know what happened to my penny?” he asked. I knew the answer when I saw Marlon  happily chewing away on a wad of bubble gum nearby."

Another MJ Brazilian Connection

"Michael Jackson was a divine person to work with. Gentleman, understandable, patient, funny, shy and very human."
--- Remy Vila Real

The above quote is taken from (and for additional reading);
(Note: the above site is in Portuguese but can be translated to English)

1984 - Brazilian Chef Remi Vila Real and Michael Jackson

Chef Remi shares her memories of Michael

I met Quincy once at a dinner I cooked for some other musician. He loved my food and asked me if he could come and do something very important. He told me that he wanted to be Michael Jackson's producer but every time he invited Michael to his house, Michael would never eat. He asked me if he could get Michael to eat some of my food. He said that Michael was a vegetarian and very picky about what he ate. I said I would try.

I went to Quincy's house and there I met Michael for the first time. I took him aside and told him, "Let me make you something very special. I know how to cook very healthy food from Brazil. All natural, all vegetarian. You will like it." He agreed. I made him some black beans, collard greens, farofa and some other things and he ate four plates full!

Quincy was kissing me all night long and from that time, he has called me many times to cook for him.

I was living in West Los Angeles in a small apartment when I got a phone call. The person on the phone asked me to look outside. He said: "See the limousine? Get in it, now!" I told him I could not because I was taking care of a person off the street and could not leave him. They said that they would send someone to look after the person right away and for me to get into the car. I told them I had to change my clothes because I was all dirty from cleaning. They didn't care. Finally I agreed when the man arrived to take care of my guest and I was taken to a big building in Beverly Hills and up to the very top penthouse. It was very luxurious.

The man on the other side of the desk handed me a ticket and said "you are going to the airport right now. Here is your ticket." I asked him why. He explained to me that Michael Jackson was having stomach aches and specifically requested me to be his "nutritionist" on the "Victory" tour. He was feeling sick to his stomach and refused to go on stage until they sent me to be his private cook. They were all very nervous. They said they were losing millions of dollars in canceled shows and I had to go right then.

I told them I could not and could only go in the morning. After a lot of arguing, they agreed to let me go home and they picked me up early in the morning and I was off to Birmingham, Alabama.

I spent eight weeks with Michael and his family on the road during the tour. It was an incredible trip I will never forget.

Michael and I became friends and I saw him number of times after that. I visited him in the hospital when his hair caught on fire and I saw him once in a while at an award's show or party. I even cooked for Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor alone in Michael's house. That was very special.

And here's a short excerpt from http://wikibin.org/articles/dona-remy.html

"Through Quincy Remy met Michael Jackson during a dinner party. Michael and Remy hit if off right away as by this time Remy was a baptized and devout Jehovah’s Witness, a faith that Michael was keenly aware of through his mother Katherine. Through Remy’s friendship and business relationship with Michael she got to meet other high profile stars. People like Elizabeth Taylor, Yul Brynner and his wife along with Paul McCartney and many others. Remy was then hired to work as Michael Jackson’s nutritionist in 1981 and 1984 during the Triumph and Victory tours. After the tours were over Remy was still being called upon to cook for the Jackson’s which she did with pleasure as she is very fond of them and has an enormous amount of respect for them."

"I thank God everyday that I was graced by this angel..."

qadreemj
Michael was truly the greatest performer. When he hit that zone, no one could touch him. I remember him doing three shows in a row and Justin Timberlake was supposed to join him onstage, but when Justin came out, he just froze and Michael was poppin’! Awesome! He didn’t need the special effects or anything else; he was the real performer.
And you could see him going into that spiritual zone backstage when he was getting ready for a show. He was always calm, relaxed, smooth. He would do his own makeup and take a few minutes alone in his dressing room where he had a picture of The Three Stooges that he liked on the wall. Then he would very calmly emerge and just blow the audience away. Even in Japan on his comeback tour when he was a little nervous about how people felt about him then, he always had the utmost professionalism and was always on time, and again, just blew them away.
I’ve had the opportunity to talk with people like Nelson Mandela and Oprah Winfrey, but the relationship with Michael was very special. Every time I left him, I’d be sad seeing him standing on the porch waving good-bye. He was always so welcoming, so hospitable. He was never about selfishness or harming anyone. He was always about trying to be closer to God, to be Christ-like. He loved more than he was loved and was always trying to get closer to God, to do the right thing, even though it wasn’t always what he wanted to do. And whenever he was tested, he looked for his strength within, from bringing God into his body and putting Him first in his life. Michael was really very spiritual and put God in control of his life.
He was truly blessed by God.
Japan has more orphanages than any place in the world and Michael wanted to do something for them while he was there, so we picked one to visit that just so happened to be supported by Bill and Melinda Gates. Michael would arrive with no publicity and with multiple toys for each child. His own kids would go with him and he would be educating them as to what was going on. The kids were delighted, but Michael would also take the time to personally shake the hands of each of the nuns at the orphanage thanking each of them for taking care of the children.
And people just melted around him. One time when he was taking his kids to Disneyland, word had gotten out that he was coming and everyone knew his favorite ride was Peter Pan, so there was gridlock by the time he arrived. But he just held his hands up and the crowd opened up like parting the Red Sea. Then he would watch the parade from the Main Street rooftop and eat hot dogs and French fries with his kids. I thank God everyday that I was graced by this angel and am reminded even more so that we can’t take our time here for granted. There is no tomorrow promised and you’ve gotta let people know you love them. That’s what Michael was about.

HIStory: MJ at Hot 97 Summer Jam

June 28, 2001: Jay-Z brings out Michael Jackson for Hot 97 Summer Jam 2001

Excerpt from an article published at :Crook From The Brook website;

Here’s a classic event that was historical when it happened. Jay-Z at the prime of his career shocks the crowd and brings out the King of Pop himself Michael Jackson. The crowd goes NUTS/INSANE!!!! What’s funny is that Jay-Z tells the crowd that Mike is here and calls him out to the stage and Mike doesn’t come out. Crowd begins to think Jay might be frontin’ but Jay goes back stage and physically bring Mr. Michael Jackson out to the stage and the crowd loses its collective mind. You can’t make these things up.

“I know Michael Jackson better come from behind that muthaf—in’ curtain,” Jay-Z said during what had to be 90 of the longest seconds of his career. Jay-Z had just announced Jackson to the crowd, but the music icon failed to make his entrance. The audience seemed to think Jay was joking — who would expect Jackson to appear at such a hip-hop-heavy concert?

But Jay quickly figured out that with cargo as precious as this, it’s probably best to hand-deliver it to the crowd. “You want me to go back and get him myself?” Jay asked a girl in the front row. “OK, I’m ‘a go get him.”

Seconds later the two walked out and posed for photos together. In one of the pictures, Michael struck a b-boy stance with his arms folded. Jackson’s only words to the crowd were “I love you all” before he exited the stage…

Magic in the Air

Here's an article I just found from another MJ site; it's a very heartwarming fan recollection of her exciting experience during Michael Jackson's 1988 Bad tour in Paris, France;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone!
To start, I want to tell you about the first time I ever saw Michael.
It was at a Bad Tour concert in Paris, the second show on June 28th, 1988.

I was just 15 years old back then and had been admiring Michael for five years.
When the Bad album was released and the tour announced, I was so excited, I just couldn't wait! Nine months later came the big day! Being 15 and though my parents love Michael, I couldn't attend both shows but got tickets for the second one.

On June 27th as well as the days before I of course recorded everything I saw on TV.

The next day we headed to Paris my parents, my English school correspondent Clare (who was a fan herself) and I. I live 250 km away from Paris, right in the centre of France. Clare and I were under the protection of Mousse, my father's friend. About 35 at he time, he didn't really know Michael.

It was frenzy around the "Parc des Princes" when we arrived, in the late afternoon. The weather was extremely hot and I remember people giving away ads for the "Making of Thriller" video (which I always proudly kept). The stadium was very impressive. Getting inside, watching the stage, WOOOOW!!! From then on it was a dream! We got rather close to the stage in spite of our late arrival. We were between the left giant screen and the stage and had a fair wiew. Kim Wilde was the suport act; I had always liked her songs (she was my favourite female artist) but excitement topped when she said "Before HE comes..." as an intro to her "You Came" hit.

I recall somebody telling Quincy Jones had just arrived but I didn't see him sit to enjoy the show, though he was not far rom us.

At 9:03 p.m. exactly, the screens came to life, then the smoke on the stage going up and... Michael appeared! I will NEVER EVER forget that moment in my life!

He was GORGEOUS, so thin, so frail but yet you could feel his strength, he was ready to blow our minds! "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" has been so special to me since that night. The concert lasted more than two hours and every second was a delight. The atmosphere was electric, pure magic in the air! The crowd was his, definitely.

"Billie Jean" was a wonderful moment because, as for many admirers, I discovered Michael with this video. All songs are clear in my mind but I have more precise memories of an endless and crazy "Heartbreak Hotel" and Michael gratifying us of a French "Je Vous Aime Beaucoup!" (I love you very much!"). "Another Part Of Me" was sheer excitement and I could name them all! "Beat It" was rageous! "Bad" just great but rhymed with the concert getting slowly to its end, which I just didn't want! I wish that night had lasted forever. The moon, the stars over the stadium, I wish the entire "Parc" would remain forever a place outta space, I didn't want to let the magic go. "Dirty Diana" was, to me, extremely high on emotion. The video of the song had just been released and I really loved it (it is still one of my favourites) but there was no match with the live version of the song.

When the concert ended the three of us had stars in our eyes. We rushed to get some memorabilia but there were only one poster left and the square button with Michael's feet on. People didn't seem to want to leave. I was very reluctant myself! I didn't want to let the magic go.

The magic stuck to me all these years, sticks to me every day like a shadow.
To the very smells around the stadiums! Silly to say but a chips smell around and I'm back there. Coco Chanel smell - which I wore that day - and I'm there. Wearing some as I'm writing this, to get in that special night's mood!:-)

Clare and I slept holding our posters close like we had a part of Michael here with us (ah, teenagers!!). I was thinking of Michael resting at the Hotel Crillon and it felt good.

Next day was hard to take, we'd have liked to step back and be there again!

This was my first  Michael concert and the first time I ever saw him.
Like a lot of fans I had to wait four years to see him during the Dangerous Tour.
I'd never have believed I would be lucky enough to meet him in person some eight years later (1996). This is another story I will save for you!

Hope you enjoyed that special memory.

L.O.V.E to you all,

Virginie.

HIStory: Michael Jackson in Bermuda

Michael Jackson in Bermuda June 1991

On June 19th 1991,  Michael visits the island of Bermuda with his friend, Home Alone star, Macaulay Culkin.

Alan Goldstein and his wife, Lynn, remember they were busy getting ready to take a nice family vacation with their youngest son, Brock, and his best pal, Mac, when they overheard Brock on the phone with Mac, saying something to the effect of yeah, sure, bring him along, too.

This is how pop superstar Michael Jackson appeared at their hotel in Bermuda with  a shy smile on his famous face, and a trunkful of squirt guns, race cars and stink bombs on his bed in the VIP suite.

Nice to meet you, the Goldsteins said, or something to that effect.

The surreal island idyll began when Brock Goldstein, a sometime actor in Orlando, met Macaulay Culkin on a movie set and the two 10-year-olds became fast friends. After his hit Home Alone was released that year, Mac Culkin made another new friend, as well: Michael Jackson.

"That sounds like fun. Mind if I tag along?" Culkin would remember Jackson saying when he mentioned the upcoming Bermuda trip with his buddy Brock.

Although prosecutors would later suggest that Jackson crashed the party, Alan Goldstein recalls that the family had been in Bermuda for a few days and had just gotten off their mopeds when the hotel relayed a message to please call "Mr. M. Jackson."

The world's best-selling voice came on the other line. "Well, I just need a break," Jackson explained. "Would you mind?" Goldstein, who grew up in Wheaton, started scrambling to find suitable quarters, until Jackson called back and said he had it all arranged -- two suites at the luxe Hamilton Princess. Goldstein swallowed hard.
"I can't afford that," he admitted.
"Don't worry," Jackson assured him, "everything's on me."
He turned up the next day in "his standard red shirt, black pants, yellow socks and wide-brim hat," Goldstein, recalled in a telephone interview from his home in Las Vegas. Jackson invited the gang up to his suite.

"He'd brought this huge trunk. He threw it up on the bed and opened it up," Goldstein says. "It looked like he'd raided a Toys R Us. He's got water guns, race cars, chewing gum that made your mouth turn black, snap-and-pops . . . "

While Lynn Goldstein mopped up behind them with Turkish towels, the two grown men and two small boys raced around the suite in a Supersoaker war.
It was great fun, the Goldstein menfolk now reminisce.
"It was a nightmare" is how Lynn good-naturedly puts it.

Jackson came to Bermuda alone, and the role of surrogate-manager fell to Lynn, who made sure the star's meals were vegetarian and that hotel management kept away fans. Jackson's trip made the local press, and then the international media.

For nearly two weeks, first in Bermuda and then back in Orlando at Disney World, the Goldsteins found themselves immersed in the other world of stardom with a benefactor they considered both weird and wonderful.

But with Jackson on board, dreams of sunny days on the beach disappeared, and they all became Vacationers of the Night, venturing out in the wee hours to protect Jackson and Culkin from being mobbed. That meant 2 a.m. dips in the hotel pool, room service instead of restaurants, shopping trips arranged after stores closed to the public.

Jackson tried to compensate for the inconveniences.
"We were talking one day about how it might be fun to try diving," Alan Goldstein said, "and next thing you know, we've got a dive boat to ourselves with some dive masters to teach us."

When the family wanted to see a variety show at one of the island's resort hotels, the cast put on a private performance at one in the morning in an otherwise empty auditorium, the Goldsteins said. "There was a Michael Jackson impersonator, which was a little awkward, but Michael was fine with it," says Alan Goldstein.

Brock Goldstein remembers the "once-in-your-lifetime" excitement of his favourite music star suddenly becoming a playmate. He remembers Jackson pulling out a small laser light and taking the boys out on the balcony to shine the beam down on bewildered beachgoers
"We'd try to get them to follow it," Brock recalls. "We'd be calling out: 'Follow the red liiiiight, follow the red liiiight. The red light has a present for you! Look, it's a red balloon!' " The three would then hurl water balloons at their targets, ducking behind the balcony to collapse in laughter.

The vacationers headed back to Orlando, where the Goldsteins then lived, and holed up in separate suites at a Disney World hotel to enjoy the theme park for a week.
Summer after summer drifted by. The Goldsteins tucked away their photo albums and lost touch with both Jackson and Culkin.

Lynn Goldstein noted, during one conversation in Bermuda, she recalled, Jackson turned to her and said wistfully: "'You know, kids are different than adults. Kids are honest with you. You can trust them. I haven't met an adult who has been my friend without ending up wanting something from me.' "

"He was like one of us," Brock Goldstein says of Jackson,  and his childlike antics in Bermuda. "It makes perfect sense to me because he never had a childhood."

HIStory: MJ fulfills his childhood dream

On June 16, 1988, Michael Jackson performed a concert at St. Jakob Stadium in Basel, Switzerland, which was attended by Bob Dylan and close friend Elizabeth Taylor.

The following day, he paid a visit to Oona O’Neill Chaplin, the widow of Michael’s biggest idol, silent film legend Charlie Chaplin, who told Michael he and her late husband had a lot in common since they both rose to success and distinction from poverty.
Michael said after the meeting, “I have just fulfilled my biggest childhood dream.”

HIStory: Gary Visit 2003

On June 11, 2003 Michael Jackson returned to his hometown Gary, Indiana (USA). Below follows a chronology of the events on that very special day:

ARRIVAL IN GARY

Michael Jackson arrived in Gary (USA) at 12:02 pm local time, about 1 hour late, and attended a press conference.

MICHAEL AT THE  CITY HALL

Michael arrived at Gary City Hall at approximately 12:27 pm in a black limo with a great deal of security. Escorted by more than a dozen security guards, he was met with a crowd of about four hundred people. Michael wore a black outfit with gold and white accents on the shoulders. He made the statement:

"It's great to be home. It's such a wonderful feeling. The hospitality is overwhelming. I left here at such a young age. I feel so much love. I love you all so much. Thank you for this wonderful, magical day that I'll never forget."
The crowd was ecstatic with enthusiasm and joy.

He then entered the City Hall to accept the key to the city and have a brief press conference. He stated this is his first trip back to Gary, Indiana since age 9 and he was very happy to be home. Scott L. King, Mayor of Gary presented the key to Michael and a street sign that said Jackson and said:

"Now that you have the key, you don't have to be a stranger."

During a press conference with Gary Mayor Scott King it was announced that Michael would help develop a performing arts center for the city. The center will be named the 'Michael J. Jackson Performing Arts Center.' According to mayor King the singer will support the project in any role he feels comfortable with, for example helping with the design or fund-raising. Michael Jackson added that being back in his hometown gives him a "wonderful feeling" and that he feels so much love that he feels like a king.

MICHAEL VISITS HIS OLD HOME

Afterwards, Michael visited the old house of the Jackson family where he had grown up. He greeted a relative, Tim Brown, who still resides in the house as well as more than 1,000 people. Inside, Michael would reminisced

"Tito slept there, Marlon slept there..."

In the living room, Michael told relatives, here

"we rehearsed, rehearsed and rehearsed all the time."

Gary resident Carol Walker said that she last saw Michael in the 1960's as he climbed a tree in the front yard. His brothers were busy loading and arranging musical instruments in the family van, she said.

"We've been waiting so many years (for his return). It's important for the kids. He can come back and tell us what he has gone through since he left Gary."

MICHAEL AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL

Michael Jackson visited Roosevelt High School where the Jackson Five performed in the 1960's. Michael told students that "with a will of iron, with perseverance and determination" they can do anything they want. The students gave him gifts and a band played 'Beat It' and 'Thriller.'

A concert choir from Gary's Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts performed "Benedictus," and other students sang and danced. He was made an honorary Roosevelt graduated and then continued on to an unlikely next stop...the local KFC! The entourage bought meals while Michael remained in the parking lot, signing autographs, and posing for photographs.

"SALUTE TO THE TROOPS"

"Salute to the Troops" at the city’s new baseball stadium was an event open to the public with free admission. The program was to feature songs and dances performed by Gary students and adults, accompanied by pictures on the stadium’s giant screen. Representatives of Michael’s fan groups were to present him with flowers and books of fan letters.

The event began with recognition to the troops, followed by the National Anthem. The Mayor came out and taking the stage, gave a brief speech. It was at that moment that Sharon Sidney and Matthew Daniel came on stage to make the presentation on behalf of MJ Unity and fans around the world.

Sharon: "Hello Gary, Indiana! And hello Michael Jackson! (the crowd cheered) We are here this evening at the place were it all began, Gary Indiana! This town saw a lot of hard work from a family of people reaching for a dream, and saw the dream come true! Michael Jackson has come back to Gary Indiana and so have his fans!"(the fans cheered and yelled) "Michael, I have been elected to present you with this bouquet of roses, the single white rose in the middle represents yourself... Truth, integrity, purity and strength. The pink roses represent all of the fans and fan clubs that form MJ Unity." (Sharon handed the roses to Michael and he thanked her and reaching over, hugged and kissed her.)

Matthew: "We have also collected thousands of e-mail messages from fans around the world who could not be here in person but wanted to let you know how very much they love you and look forward to many more years of making magic together." (Matthew presented Michael with 5 books filled with messages from the fans. Michael thanked Matthew and took the books.)

Sharon: "Stay strong, stay true, you are forever the King of Pop, Rock and Soul!" (the crowd cheered!)

Once Michael and the Mayor left the stage the local youths started their performances. The acts ranged from Elementary to High School and many were renditions of Michael's songs. Michael enjoyed the performances very much and tapped his feet and 'moved' to the music. At one point he even took a cell phone from one young girl and had a brief conversation with her mother. Michael seemed to have a wonderful day, and Gary had a day to remember!

The Post-Tribune News quoted comments by Deborah Dannelly of MJFC about Michael’s visit to Gary:

"Gary, Indiana, is an icon of cities to his fans, because that’s where he was born. I don’t think for one minute he’s forgotten his home town."

Gary shouldn’t feel badly, she added, that Michael hasn’t visited more frequently.

"Michael quickly became the world’s person. He was not Gary’s very long."

"The man has a special quality about him and I hope his actions inspire others to do the same."

Here's an article clip from Jet Magazine, June 8, 1992 issue;
